Synopsis

Makoto Nagahisa’s Burn is set in Tokyo’s Kabukicho district, where a runaway teenager named Ju-Ju finds refuge among a group of outsiders living on the margins of society. For a brief moment, the community offers the acceptance and freedom she has been searching for. That sense of belonging begins to unravel when trust breaks down, turning what once felt like a safe haven into a place she can no longer escape.

  • Release Date: January 25, 2026
  • Director: Makoto Nagahisa
  • Genre: Sci-Fi, Drama
  • Runtime: 103 Minutes
  • Studio/Platform: K2 Pictures

The film combines coming-of-age drama with science-fiction elements, using its futuristic setting to examine isolation, youth culture, and the desire to find a place in the world. Rather than building toward large-scale spectacle, the story remains closely tied to Ju-Ju’s personal struggle for independence and identity.

Storyline

Nana Mori takes center stage as Ju-Ju, and nearly every major event in the film is experienced through her perspective. The character enters Kabukicho looking for connection but gradually learns that survival often requires difficult choices. Her relationships with the people she meets become the emotional core of the story, creating both moments of comfort and conflict.

Because the film focuses on a relatively small group of characters, the interactions feel personal rather than plot-driven. Every friendship and betrayal directly shapes Ju-Ju’s journey through the city.

Production Details

Following the cult success of We Are Little Zombies, director Makoto Nagahisa once again blends youth drama with unconventional storytelling. Kabukicho is presented as more than a backdrop; it becomes a living environment filled with neon lights, uncertainty, and constant movement.

The visual style reflects the emotional state of its protagonist, shifting between wonder and anxiety as Ju-Ju’s circumstances change. The science-fiction elements remain grounded in character development, allowing the film to focus on human relationships rather than technology itself.
