Pilgrims is a South Korean animated science-fiction film based on Kim Cho-yeop’s acclaimed story Why Don’t the Pilgrims Return?. Set in a sealed space society where pain, disease, and suffering no longer exist, the story follows a tradition that requires every eighteen-year-old to spend one year on Earth as a rite of passage. While most eventually return home, some disappear forever. The film centers on the mystery behind those missing pilgrims and the secrets hidden beyond the utopian world they left behind.
In a future civilization isolated from hardship, young citizens must undertake a mandatory pilgrimage to Earth upon reaching adulthood. What appears to be a ceremonial journey gradually reveals a much deeper mystery when several pilgrims never return. As questions surrounding their disappearance grow, the search for answers uncovers truths about life, death, memory, and the society that sent them away in the first place. The story combines coming-of-age drama with an interstellar mystery built around the question posed by the film’s title.
The film is directed by Pyeon-Gang Ho, an animator who has worked on projects in both South Korea and Japan. Pilgrims is adapted from Kim Cho-yeop’s science-fiction work published in 2019. Production was handled by 21Studio, with Hyun Song We serving as art director. The project was showcased at animation festivals before its theatrical release and attracted attention for bringing one of Korea’s most respected modern science-fiction stories to the screen.
Pilgrims was released in South Korean theaters on June 3, 2026. As of now, no international streaming platform or global digital release has been officially announced.
