Synopsis

Vishwanath & Sons is already released, arriving in Indian theatres on August 14, 2026. Directed by Venky Atluri, the Tamil-Telugu family drama gives Suriya a noticeably softer role: Sanjay Vishwanath, a wealthy businessman and accomplished international shooter whose carefully controlled life begins to unravel when family responsibilities and an unconventional romance enter the picture.

This is not the sort of Suriya vehicle built around mass action or heroic spectacle. Its interest lies in relationships, emotional baggage and the uncomfortable questions that come with a significant age difference between two people. The film also tackles parenthood, surrogacy and the pressure to build a conventional family.

The result is warm but imperfect. Critics have praised Suriya, Mamitha Baiju and Radhika Sarathkumar, while the writing has drawn criticism for becoming uneven and formulaic in parts of the second half.

Storyline

Sanjay Vishwanath has spent much of his life pursuing excellence. He is a successful businessman and an Olympic-level shooter, but his personal life is considerably less settled. His mother, Nirmala Devi, wants him to marry and experience the kind of family life she believes he is missing. Sanjay, however, has his own reasons for keeping emotional distance from marriage.

His decision to become a father through surrogacy changes that equation. When his young son Abhay faces a serious medical problem, the surrogate mother, Maddy, becomes unexpectedly important to Sanjay and his family.

Maddy is considerably younger than Sanjay, and their growing connection forces both characters to confront the obvious complications. What begins as a relationship shaped by circumstance gradually becomes something more personal.

The film’s emotional core is therefore not simply whether Sanjay and Maddy will become a couple. It is about whether two people at very different stages of life can understand each other’s fears, expectations and definitions of happiness.

Atluri keeps the tone accessible and family-friendly, although the second half carries more subplots than the central relationship really needs. That unevenness is the film’s biggest narrative weakness.

Cast & Performances

  • Suriya as Sanjay Vishwanath — Suriya is the film’s strongest asset. He plays Sanjay with restraint rather than relying on his usual larger-than-life image. His lighter scenes, frustration and emotional breakdowns all feel more grounded than his recent action-heavy roles.
  • Mamitha Baiju as Maddy — Mamitha brings warmth and emotional intelligence to Maddy, making her more than a convenient romantic interest in Sanjay’s story. Critics have specifically highlighted her performance alongside Suriya.
  • Radhika Sarathkumar as Nirmala Devi — As Sanjay’s mother, she gives the family drama much of its emotional grounding and adds weight to the film’s exploration of family expectations.
  • Raveena Tandon — Tandon is part of the supporting ensemble, adding another established presence to the family-oriented cast.
  • Yogi Babu — He contributes to the film’s lighter side, helping prevent the emotional material from becoming relentlessly heavy.
  • Nassar and Raghu Babu — Both add experience to the supporting cast and help broaden the family-drama ensemble.

Suriya and Mamitha are particularly effective together because the film does not rush their relationship into conventional romance. Their chemistry develops through circumstance and emotional dependence, even if the screenplay does not always explore the difficult questions around their age gap with enough depth.
