Jumanji: Open World is an upcoming American adventure comedy directed by Jake Kasdan, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg. Serving as the fifth and reportedly final chapter in the Jumanji film series, the movie reunites the beloved cast led by Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and Karen Gillan. Fan favorites from Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Jumanji: The Next Level also return, alongside several new additions to the franchise.
Sony has kept most of the story under wraps, but the first trailer and official previews reveal a major twist that changes the rules of the game. This time, the adventure doesn’t stay inside Jumanji—the world of the game begins spilling into reality, bringing its dangerous creatures, unpredictable challenges, and larger-than-life heroes into the real world.
As familiar avatars like Dr. Smolder Bravestone, Ruby Roundhouse, Mouse Finbar, and Professor Shelly Oberon find themselves navigating modern-day America without their human players controlling them, they must adapt to a world they’ve never known. Meanwhile, the original players are forced to confront Jumanji in an entirely new way, as the line between the game and reality disappears.
Blending action, fantasy, and comedy, Jumanji: Open World promises bigger set pieces, fresh challenges, and heartfelt moments while bringing the modern Jumanji saga to its conclusion.
Jake Kasdan returns to direct after the success of the previous two Jumanji films, with Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, Matt Tolmach, and Kasdan producing. Principal photography began in November 2025 in Los Angeles and wrapped in March 2026, with cinematography by Ben Davis and a musical score composed by Henry Jackman.
The film’s title, Jumanji: Open World, was officially unveiled during CinemaCon 2026, where Sony also debuted the first trailer. According to the filmmakers, this installment expands the franchise’s scope by reversing the concept introduced in the recent films—rather than people entering the game, the game itself invades the real world. The movie also pays tribute to the original 1995 Jumanji through several visual callbacks honoring Robin Williams and the legacy of the franchise.
Jumanji: Open World is scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 25, 2026, distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing. It was originally planned for an earlier December release before moving to Christmas Day. Details about its digital and streaming release are expected to be announced after its theatrical run.
