Colony is a South Korean zombie thriller written by Yeon Sang-ho and Choi Gyu-seok and directed by Yeon Sang-ho, the filmmaker behind Train to Busan and Peninsula. Released in South Korea on May 21, 2026, the film stars Jun Ji-hyun, Koo Kyo-hwan, Ji Chang-wook, Kim Shin-rok, Shin Hyun-been, and Go Soo. Set almost entirely inside the Dunguri Building, the story begins when a rapidly mutating virus is unleashed during a biotechnology conference. Authorities immediately quarantine the complex, trapping hundreds of people inside with infected individuals that continue to evolve in increasingly dangerous ways. The film had its world premiere in the Midnight Screenings section of the 2026 Cannes Film Festival before its theatrical release in South Korea.
Professor Kwon Se-jeong attends a biotechnology conference expecting an opportunity to rebuild her career. Instead, the event descends into chaos after a mysterious virus spreads through the building. As the infected mutate and their behavior becomes increasingly unpredictable, survivors are forced into an intense fight for survival. With the building sealed off and no immediate rescue in sight, Se-jeong and a small group of survivors attempt to understand the outbreak while navigating the growing threat from both the infected and desperate humans trapped inside.
Colony is directed by Yeon Sang-ho from a screenplay co-written with longtime collaborator Choi Gyu-seok. The film is produced by Wow Point and Smilegate and distributed by Showbox. Principal photography began in March 2025 and concluded in June 2025, with filming taking place in South Korea. Choreographer Jeon Young, who previously worked with Yeon on Train to Busan and Peninsula, returned to design the movements of the infected. The film introduces a new type of zombie that evolves collectively and develops increasing intelligence as the outbreak spreads. Cinematography was handled by Byun Bong-sun, editing by Han Mee-yeon, and the score was composed by Kim Suk-won.
Colony premiered at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival on May 16, 2026, and was released theatrically in South Korea on May 21, 2026, by Showbox. The film is currently playing in selected international markets. No official global streaming platform or digital release date has been announced at this time.
