Kara is a 2026 Indian Tamil-language action thriller movie directed by Vignesh Raja and produced by Vels Film International and Think Studios. The film stars Dhanush in the lead role alongside Mamitha Baiju, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Jayaram, Karunas, and K. S. Ravikumar. Set against the backdrop of the 1991 Gulf War era, the movie combines crime, emotional drama, suspense, and heist-thriller elements.
The film became one of the most talked-about Tamil releases of 2026 because of its intense first-look posters, Dhanush’s rugged transformation, and the mystery surrounding its storyline during production when it was known only as “D54.” Directed by Por Thozhil filmmaker Vignesh Raja, the movie aims to deliver a grounded and emotional crime thriller with a strong rural setting.
Kara takes place in Ramanathapuram during 1991 at the time of the Gulf War crisis. The story follows Karasaamy, a former thief trying to leave his troubled past behind and live peacefully with his family. However, when his ancestral land and livelihood come under threat, he is forced to return to crime for one final dangerous mission.
The movie unfolds over a tense 16-day period as Karasaamy becomes trapped between morality, survival, and redemption. What begins as a desperate heist gradually evolves into a larger emotional and political conflict involving corruption, financial exploitation, and family responsibility.
Director Vignesh Raja described the film as an “emotional suspense thriller,” combining intense heist sequences with strong emotional drama. The movie reportedly focuses heavily on tension-building, realistic rural environments, and morally conflicted characters rather than stylized commercial action.

The film also marks one of Mamitha Baiju’s biggest Tamil projects following her growing popularity in South Indian cinema. Suraj Venjaramoodu’s role in the movie received particular praise from early viewers and critics.
Kara is directed by Vignesh Raja, who previously gained recognition for the thriller Por Thozhil. The screenplay was co-written by Vignesh Raja and Alfred Prakash, while the music was composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar. Cinematography was handled by Theni Eswar and editing by Sreejith Sarang.
Principal photography began in July 2025 and wrapped in December 2025. The filmmakers recreated 1990s-era Ramanathapuram with large practical sets to authentically portray the Gulf War period atmosphere.
The film also attracted controversy before release because of a title dispute involving another Tamil movie named Karaa. A legal plea was reportedly filed in the Madras High Court shortly before the film’s release.
Kara was officially released in theaters worldwide on April 30, 2026. The movie opened strongly at the box office and became one of the biggest Tamil openings of the year.
