Normal is a 2026 action crime thriller film, which Ben Wheatley directed and Derek Kolstad, the creator of the John Wick franchise, wrote the screenplay. The movie features Bob Odenkirk, Lena Headey, and Henry Winkler in a black comedy that combines a small-town mystery with big action. A temporary sheriff’s ordinary job soon turns into a violent fight against a criminal gang that has disguised itself as the town’s good people.
Ulysses Richardson agrees to be a deputy sheriff for a short time in the sleepy town of Normal, Minnesota, and he is looking forward to the change which will help him forget the mistakes and the problems with himself which have been troubling him all this time.
Actually, the town looks to be just as its name impliesquiet, nice, and quite unlike the frenzy of the city. Things take a turn for the worse after the bank robbery gets out of hand. Upon further inquiry, Ulysses finds out that the robbery is just a part of the bigger problem.
The leader of the town, the deputies, and even the people who have lived there for a long time are concealing a very dangerous secret related to a big criminal business. As a result, with nobody to rely on, Ulysses is thrown into the struggle for his life against a whole town which is ready to do anything to keep their darkest secrets. Then there is a great deal of mixing of the twists, the humor that is not always very clean, and the continuous use of force as he almost gives up to bring light to the facts.
Normal marks a reunion between Bob Odenkirk and writer Derek Kolstad, who collaborate again after their success with Nobody. The pair now also work alongside director Ben Wheatley, one of the most distinctive British filmmakers These days, whose style is a blend of open comedy, violence to the extreme, and storytelling full of tension.
The film does not rely on action alone but instead, the music of suspense is introduced through the mysterious setting and the unusual characters, and only then does the story explode with the first big high-stakes confrontations. It has been said that the offbeat style of this film is similar to that of Fargo, whereas its action scenes are full of fast-paced energy just as Kolstad’s work normally buzzes with.
Normal was given the green light for a U.S. cinema release on April 17 2026 by Magnolia Pictures. After the time in the cinema, the movie was made available on digital platforms. Streaming services vary by country and platform.
