Primitive War merges psychological war with the primal terror of ancient predatory animals. The setting of this film is an isolated area currently occupied by modern warfare, though with many restrictions on the use of modern weapons.
As a result, this film focuses on tactical superiority rather than individual survival. Rather than show war solely in terms of a strategy-based situation, Primitive War uses elements from both of these styles of filmmaking to convey a sense of chaos and fear combined with a regression of an individual (a soldier) back to instinct when confronted with an opponent who is beyond the realm of reason and discussion.
By combining elements of realistic warfare with aspects of “creature” horror, Primitive War creates an extremely unique storytelling experience and provides its audience with a very intense mood of human vulnerability as society’s constraints collapse.
