Rise of the Conqueror follows Timur Barlas long before he became one of history’s most feared rulers. Set during the collapse of the Mongol Empire in Central Asia, the film opens with Timur returning from exile to a region fractured by rival tribes, political betrayals, and constant warfare. With trade routes under threat and kingdoms fighting for survival, he sets out to unite the region and establish what would later become the Timurid Empire. Rather than covering Timur’s entire life, the film focuses on the years that transformed him from a warrior into a leader.
Christian Mortensen takes on the role of Timur, portraying him as a battle-hardened strategist forced to make difficult choices as power shifts around him. The story places considerable attention on Timur’s alliances and rivalries, particularly his relationship with Hussayn, played by Mahesh Jadu.
Yulduz Rajabova appears as Aljai, one of the film’s most important supporting characters, while Joshua Jo, Sanjar Madi, and Umit Ulgen help populate the political landscape surrounding Timur’s rise. The cast largely succeeds in making the film’s historical conflicts accessible without overwhelming viewers with excessive exposition.
Director Jacob Schwarz approaches the material as a large-scale historical epic. The production was filmed across locations in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, giving the movie a visual authenticity that many modern historical dramas struggle to achieve. Vast landscapes, fortified cities, and cavalry battles form the backbone of the film’s visual identity.
The action sequences focus on military tactics as much as combat itself, reflecting Timur’s reputation as a commander rather than simply a warrior. While some critics praised the scale of the battle scenes and Central Asian setting, reactions to the screenplay were more divided. Even so, the film stands out for bringing a rarely explored historical figure to mainstream audiences.
